I've been obsessed with golf my whole life. As a junior, I played pretty well, but
even then I was just as interested in how the game worked as I was in playing it.
What really caught my attention was equipment. I used to talk my way onto tour vans at big events just to see what the pros had in their bags. It fascinated me how some clubs felt like magic and others didn't work at all - and I didn't understand why. At that point, it was all just trial and error. That needed to
change.
I turned that obsession into a career - first as a PGA pro, coaching and building my early workshops. That's when I began to realise something crucial: you can't fully understand a swing without understanding the tool in the golfer's hands. And vice versa.
When I founded Urban Golf in 2004, I stepped away from coaching for a time, but the new path opened up extraordinary opportunities. I connected with some of the world's finest club makers and, while developing simulator tech, I got to work with the engineers behind the most advanced tracking systems in the game.
In 2006, I opened a new workshop in our Smithfield location. That's when I really began to explore ShaftMax - a modern evolution of the original True Temper Shaft Lab. It helped me understand something fundamental: how each golfer loads the club and transfers energy is at the heart of their swing. It's not random. It's wired in. It's their golfing DNA.
Combining that knowledge with hands-on craftsmanship - from sole grinds to
head shapes to nuanced build details - allows me to build with purpose. I don't
guess. I form a hypothesis, prove it, and take full responsibility for the result.
When I get it wrong, I learn. When it's right, the player feels it instantly.
That's what I do. And I still love it.
